Sari
-Indian
Traditional Costume-
Miyu
It is said that the sari is the most elegant and beautiful
traditional costume in the world. A difference between sari and other country’s
traditional costume is that sari is still be worn as a daily clothes in India
and other Indian area such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. A reason why sari
still continues to be worn in these areas, even though western clothes are
spread, is because of its flexibility and efficiency. More than seventy-five presents
of women in India is still wearing sari in various situations and consider sari
as a multipurpose and useful clothes. Its gorgeous design and material are
attracting the world’s attention. I found its original way of wearing, wrap a
piece of cloth around the body, is really surprising and unique. Also I think
it has a common point with Japanese traditional costume, kimono, as it is made of a cloth.
Sari is a piece of cloth whose length is five to eight meters. Without
the hem, there is no needlework at all and no matter how extremely big
difference in women’s figure, they do not need to choose their size of sari.
Both thin women and not thin women can wear the same sari. This is another big
reason why sari is inherited for thousands of years. There are all sorts of
sari, ranging from the very expensive to the simply cheap. The cheap one is
around eight hundred yen and the expensive one is more than one million yen. Even
though in the middle class, Indian women have several saris which cost about
several hundred thousand yen for special occasions. Sari is a property for
Indian women and they take over an expensive sari to their children and to
their grandchildren. In this point, sari is efficient because people do not
need to care about the size. I think this is also a common point with Japanese
kimono. Sari is only a piece of cloth but it cannot be easily influenced by
people’s figures and trends and maintain an old tradition. Sari is treated
preciously for generation to generation. I think this is the real eco-friendly
clothes because there is no reason to throw away sari unless they are worn out.
There are various ways of sari draping in different regions, castes,
situations such as formal and casual, and people. It is said that there are
more than 80 recorded ways to wear a sari. The most common style, which we see
often in the TV, is for the sari to be wrapped around the waist, with the loose
end of the drape to be worn over the shoulder. It is called Navi style and can be worn in any
occasion.
Indian traditional costume, sari is elegant and gorgeous clothes
which make it possible to pass the tradition and history on to the next
generations directly. Unfortunately, less and less people wear traditional
costume is the world but the reason why this sari is still continued to be worn
in Indian areas is its eco-friendliness is flexibility. As long as sari has
these features, I am sure that people will continue to wear it and become more
precious.
